ServSafe®

ServSafe® Course and Exam

Michigan Fitness Foundation requires all SNAP-Ed Partners implementing food tastings or cooking demonstrations be supervised by a designated staff member who has obtained the ServSafe® Food Manager Certification. ServSafe® certified staff must ensure those who are conducting food tastings or cooking demonstrations are implementing activities in a way that meets all food safety standards.

ServSafe® is the National Restaurant Association’s certification for handling and serving food safely. ServSafe® Manager Training and Course Book will help you understand the food safety risks you may encounter when working with food while prepping and conducting cooking lessons and food tastings.

Training Options

Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF) is not offering in-person ServSafe® trainings and exams at this time.

There are a few alternative options for ServSafe® certification.

  • Third-party organizations that provide ServSafe® training and/or proctoring sessions. A few include
  • Local organizations in your area, such as health departments or colleges/universities may provide ServSafe® Training and Exam Proctoring.
  • Online options are available through the National Restaurant Association. This includes training and a service that offers individuals online exams. Technical requirements such as a laptop or desktop computer with a working webcam and mic and a strong internet connection are required. Here are some FAQs on the process.

MFF can provide the ServSafe® Manager book and study materials if one is not provided by a third-party trainer for SNAP-Ed staff who will be taking the ServSafe® exam.

Costs associated with ServSafe® are reimbursable if reasonable and necessary for your SNAP-Ed programming.
